Remarks on Torture and 911truth for DC Toerture Accountability Action Day Rally in DC 6/25/09

Greetings. No, I’m not Dick Cheney. He just copies my haircut.
I bring a message of support from my movement, the 911truth movement. This talk with links is posted at my website 911courage.org.
Let me explain how asking ALL the hard questions about 9/11 and the war on terror can advance our efforts to hold torturers accountable and restore honor to this land.
How many of you WANT to be honored to be Americans? Please note we have that in common with so many of our brothers and sisters who are adversaries. We just have higher standards.
One of the important features of the use of torture is that it is used to extract false evidence. Thus, it is a means of hiding from the truth. These lies, of course, are then used to excuse further torture.
Gandhi used the term “satyagraha” to mean “holding fast to the truth” or “putting one’s whole weight on the truth.” Soon many of us will risk arrest openly and without hatred, as Gandhi once did. Because torture’s primary purpose is to promulgate lies, extra dedication to the WHOLE truth becomes that much more important..
The recent public focus on torture was aided by President Obama’s admission there are large numbers of yet to be released torture photos. Now that the government’s right to have state secrets is being renewed, full admission of wrongs and accountability for those wrongs is threatened. If secrecy trumps openness, how can we know torture isn’t continuing? If dedication to exposing all lies is not our goal, how can we be sure those lies will not be used to generate more torture? Wouldn’t exposing the lie that bin Laden and Arab Muslims did 911 undercut American public support for torture of Arab Muslims? Did you know the FBI’s charges against bin Laden DO NOT INCLUDE 9/11? Did you know that the video of bin Laden’s admission for 9/11 was a fraud?
Those Americans who justify torture are not willing to admit that the government could generate false flag operations as an excuse to go to war. They are whipped up into a frenzied state of fear and can’t make logical decisions. They conclude the enemy must be stopped at all costs. That’s how the Germans under Hitler felt about the Reichstag fire, which was blamed on communists, and Operation Himmler, which was used to prove aggression by Poland . Reliance on arguments for the beauties of peace would not have sufficiently addressed the fear which was based on lies then, and it won’t now.
The people who yearly produce the top 25 Censored Stories, Project Censored, have put forth a study suggesting the many of most respected progressive magazines and websites are committing self censorship concerning 911. You’ve heard 911truth activists called “conspiracy theorists” by brothers and sisters that both you and I respect. When wouldn’t this term “conspiracy theorist” be an effective way of diminishing critics of ANY evil act by ANYONE with power? There are over a thousand highly credentialed people including scientists, engineers and former intelligence professionals listed at patriotsquestion911.com. It should concern all of us that it is almost impossible to witness a civil discussion of this issue between those who disagree.
Those who have been working to stop torture know that torturers can come from tyrannies know to be either right or left politically. The 911truth movement is transpolitical in the same way. Our activists come from the whole traditional political spectrum. I disagree with brother and sister 911truth activists on many other issues. When asked to participate in a debate in the 70’s, My professor Noam Chomsky noted to a small group of us that the truth is not somewhere between two arbitrary points. The truth is wherever it is. It is too easy for those of us with a well developed world view to get stuck in that worldview.
One quarter of the footnotes in the 911 Commission report are traceable to the results of torture. The commission staff even renewed calls to interrogators for more answers AFTER knowing the interrogation methods included brutality. That evidence given to the commission was given THIRD HAND. 92 CIA interrogation tapes from this period have been destroyed. Since the widows who pushed for the investigation say 70% of their 400 questions were not properly addressed, the commission wasn’t even asking the right questions. 911 family members are currently attempting to secure a real investigation through the use of a ballot question this fall in New York City . Those who call for an end to torture need to support these family members’ efforts.
